Illuminations: Reflections of Earth

Background:
In case you're not familiar with it, Illuminations is Epcot's nighttime fireworks show.  It takes place in World Showcase, which is a ring of 11 pavilions that each represent a different country.  In the middle of the circle is World Showcase Lagoon, and it is in and over the lagoon where Illuminations unfolds.

Epcot has had a fireworks show in various forms since opening in 1982, and this present incarnation of Illuminations began in 1999 as part of Epcot's Millennium Celebration.  The score is absolutely incredible, and at the end of the show the instrumental "Reflections of Earth" gives way to the beautiful "We Go On," sung by Kellie Coffey who we heard from in #36, Promise.

One critique I have of Illuminations is the sphere in the middle of the lagoon.  It represents the Earth, and for part of the show it rotates and shows pictures where the continents are.  It's a great concept, but the execution is flawed because the globe and the continents are too small to see the pictures clearly, and the whole thing lasts a bit too long.

And if you ever watch Illuminations, here's a Sweedo family pro tip (which I don't give out to just anybody)!  Before you pick a spot to stand, figure out which way the wind is blowing and then stand upwind.  Even if it does not seem windy, the smoke will always still blow in some direction, and you don't want to be downwind of the smoke if you can help it.

  1. I had no idea Kellie Coffey got her start singing Disney songs. By 2002 she went on to be a country singer who had modest success on the charts for a couple of years before disappearing. I never thought her voice was particularly well suited to be a country singer. She sounds more at home with the two Disney songs on your countdown.

    1. That's cool that you recognize her. I wasn't familiar with her country songs - I'll give them a listen at some point.

    2. Her biggest hits were "When You Lie Next to Me", "At the End of the Day", and "Texas Plates". The last one was my favorite but I can't find a version online with sound quality that does the guitar work justice.
