Background / Personal Connection:
I finally saw Frozen for the first time earlier this year, and I liked it.  I'm not sure, however, that it was any better than other Disney movies, so it's a little hard to explain the film's stratospheric popularity in the wake of Frozen books, Frozen costumes, Frozen birthday parties, and Frozen anything else you can imagine.  There's surely a gigantic Frozen factory in China devoted to manufacturing nothing but Frozen paraphernalia and then shipping it to all corners of the earth. And next May, as I mentioned in a previous post, Frozen will be coming to Epcot's Norway Pavilion in the form of a boat ride -- there may even be people already lining up and sleeping in tents for that one.

The sister relationship in the story resonates with a lot of people, and Olaf the snowman is a fun character and symbol.  But I imagine that a huge reason for the success of the Frozen brand is due to "Let It Go" which hit the top 5 on the pop charts and also won both an Oscar and a Grammy for best song.  I like the Demi version better (heard during the end credits), but the Idina version is also well-loved by many (the video linked above has over 495 million youtube views as of this post).  And with Frozen 2 in the works, I suppose the Frozen phenomenon isn't letting go anytime soon.

  1. The primary appeal of Frozen - from what I gleaned 'round the net - was that the 'love' story wasn't between a guy and a girl to end up as bf/gf, but between the two sisters. So, love still saves the day, but it's not about the smoochies, it's about family and women being awesome and not needing to be saved by a man. Which is a lot less common in the Disney selection of films.

As for the song - I like the Idina version better. =)
