Background / Personal Connection:
Here's a movie that flies way under the radar yet was one of my favorite movies as a kid.  I distinctly remember going to see it in an afternoon showing with my mother at The Roxy, a throwback movie theater with a 1920's feel (which makes sense because it was built in the 1920's).  The movie is about a young Norwegian teen, Haakon Haakonsen, who leaves his snowy Norwegian homestead to support his family by earning some money at sea.  After his ship capsizes during a storm, he wakes up alone on a deserted tropical island.  He finds a buried treasure along with a picture of a pirate (played by noted actor Gabriel Byrne) whom he recognizes from the ship, and he builds traps on the island while waiting for the pirates' inevitable return.

I can't recommend this movie highly enough.  For a 10 year old boy, the story was perfect -- adventure, islands, pirates, and all in a suspenseful yet family friendly manner.  They don't make movies like this anymore.  As for the soundtrack, the entire score is outstanding.  I had a hard time finding the main theme online -- the link above is to a "trailer" that has elements of the theme, but if you want to listen to the whole thing, watch the movie!

One other fun memory of seeing this in the theater is that there is a moment in the film where a gorilla surprises Haakon, and at that moment my frightened mother yelled out loud and grabbed my arm -- that's still one that we chuckle about today.
