Disney Song #35: Another Part of Me

To Listen: Click Here

The Facts:
  • Writer/Performer: Michael Jackson
  • Year: 1986
  • Key: D Minor / B Major

Heard In:
Captain EO

Background / Personal Connection:
This is a fun one.  Captain EO debuted in 1986 in Epcot's Imagination Pavilion as a 3-D short movie about a team of ragtag space crusaders who use the power of music to restore goodness to an evil-looking queen and her decaying kingdom.  There was significant star power in front of and behind the camera including Michael Jackson, Angelica Huston, Francis Ford Coppola (director), and George Lucas (executive producer), and the talent shone through to create a memorable, classic show.

Sadly, the show was pulled in 1996 after Michael Jackson starting making headlines for the wrong reasons, and it was replaced by "Honey I Shrunk the Audience" which I never cared for.  But in 2010 (the year after Jackson's death), Captain EO made a triumphant return and still runs today (and also can be watched online).  It holds up well (despite some 80's hairstyles) and is a way for the kids of today to witness Michael Jackson in his prime.  And the "Where's the map? Hooter ate it!" line is a Sweedo family favorite and one that got brought up often when we were using a map.

This song featured on Michael's "Bad" album, but from what I read online I believe that the song was written for Captain EO originally (which is why it's eligible for my countdown since I'm only considering songs created for Disney).  And since you asked, here are my top 5 Michael Jackson songs in reverse order:

5. The Way You Make Me Feel -- Classic.

4. I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus  -- A Jackson 5 Christmas song highlighted by Michael's vocals.  What a talent.

3. Another Part of Me

2. We are the World  -- A legendary song by an all-star cast, headlined by Michael.

1. Will You Be There -- #1 in my book.  An all-timer.
