The Facts:
- Writer: Walter Afanasieff
- Performer: Heather Headley
- Year: 2001
- Key: E Major
Heard In:
Golden Dreams, California Adventure, 2001-2009
Background:
Golden Dreams was a 20 minute movie about the history of California that ran in California Adventure, and "Just One Dream" was the song heard during the grand finale. The influence of Epcot's The American Adventure on Golden Dreams is clear: from the title ("Golden Dream" is the final song in The American Adventure), to the chronological histories presented, to the finales showing grainy photos of real people set to dramatic music.
The movie is hosted by Whoopi Goldberg, and it is forward thinking in its portrayal of issues surrounding Chinese, Japanese, and Mexican immigrants. And I couldn't help but notice a shot of Tiger Woods -- safe to say that after his recent troubles, he'd have been cut from the hero montage finale if this movie was still in existence. Sadly, the film gave way to The Little Mermaid ride in 2009 and now lives only in our memories (and in fluttery youtube videos).
Musically Speaking:
A beautiful song and an amazing performance by Grammy award winner Heather Headley. As mentioned earlier, this song has a "Golden Dream"-like feel to it in terms of style and substance. Another song it reminds me of is Celine Dion's "The Power of the Dream" from the Atlanta 1996 Summer Olympics Opening Ceremony. What a moment that was.

Personal Connection:
I went to Disneyland in 1998 and 2002. I remember the years clearly because the World Cup was going on during both trips, and as grateful as I was to be on vacation, I was a bit wistful from missing the action from my favorite sporting event. In fact, I can remember driving to San Diego and listening to games on the radio in Spanish (which I didn't speak, but it was my only option). But enough about me and soccer. I do distinctly remember seeing this movie and really enjoying it, especially the finale and "Just One Dream." I also remember thinking at the time that it would have been cool if Disney would have made a movie like this about every state. There's still time for that one!
I am glad that you included this beautiful song.
