The Halfway Point Podcast!

Now that I've reviewed exactly half of the episodes, I thought I'd celebrate with a podcast. Starring special guest..... me!

  1. Enjoyed the podcast. A few random thoughts I mused about while listening.....

In regards to the "shakes", I think Stephen J. Cannell might grumble about that regular MacGyver feature as a ripoff of Jim Rockford from "The Rockford Files" back in the 70s. I have only seen a couple episodes of that series in passing but my co-workers rave about it and frequently cite Rockford nursing his sore hand after he hit somebody, leading me to believe it was at least a semiregular feature on that series. And I'm not sure if you ever watched "The Fall Guy" from the early to mid 80s, which was my favorite series pre-MacGyver, but on that show's theme song, hero Colt Seavers does an epic "shake" after landing a punch in a bar brawl.

None of MacGyver's "love interests" necessarily captured my fancy although the best of the bunch is from an episode you haven't yet reviewed. As I just said a few reviews ago, I really liked Laura Sand from "The Ten Percent Solution" and thought she and MacGyver had great chemistry at that art auction. If he was gonna get involved with a woman, I would have liked to have seen it been her. Another former girlfriend you didn't mention who was arguably more psychopathic than Ellen Jerico was Roxie Yates, although to be fair she died and her sister Carla was role-playing Roxie.

Great MacGyverisms from already reviewed episodes you didn't mention but I'd include on my favorites' lists include the rubber glove hydrogen fireball from "There but for the Grace", the bicycle and grindstone shed explosion from "Eagles", and all three big ones from "Nightmares" (slingshot bed, battery and TV tube bomb, plumbing pipe magnet).

Glad to hear you feel you lowballed "Trumbo's World". Still confused about your dislike for "Blood Brothers" as I think it was very well done and shouldn't be in the same stream of consciousness as the live-action cartoon that was "Dalton, Jack of Spies". :)

Looking forward to your top half!

    1. Thanks for listening! Interesting point on the Rockford Files - I haven't ever seen that or The Fall Guy since it was before my time (and I'm not the same student of tv that you are).

I didn't remember Roxie as MacGyver's girlfriend, I thought she was just his friend. But I don't doubt you're right - I'll have to watch the beginning of that one again sometime. I like Dr. Sand too. Other female guest stars who I enjoyed were Diana from For Love or Money (even though she was probably too greedy for him) and Joanna from Twice Stung.

    2. In the elevator en route to the penthouse before the malfunction on "Two TImes Trouble", "Roxie" and MacGyver commiserated on how long it took MacGyver to ask Roxie out on a date. Not sure if they were meant to be lovers in the way that MacGyver and Amy Austin were but they definitely were a high school couple.

As for "The Fall Guy", do yourself a favor and check out its theme song, both to see the epic "shake" and to get a sample of one of TV's most memorably cheeseball theme songs. The story on the DVD set was that the producer actually pitched the SONG to the network and they gave him the green light to make the show based on that alone!

    3. Wow, that is indeed quite a theme song and car footage. I miss the days of 2 minute long theme songs and non-cgi stunts.

    4. Wow! I remember The Fall Guy (used to be one of my fave shows *g*). Lee Majors actually sings the theme song. I did not know the show was pitched as just the song. That's kind of amusing. (Also, I'm a sucker for catchy theme songs/tunes.)

  2. Great round-up of the blog so far. I do remember the Rockford Files and now you mention it, he did grimace and shake his hand after a punch. Am gradually catching up with my comments on some of the recent episodes and some of the older postings; To be a man, The escape, which are among my favourites. Will try to keep up better in future! Thanks for some great posts.

    1. Forgot to say; like Mark I'm glad you're regretting your low ranking for Trumbo's World: its another season 1 epic for me.

  3. Loved the podcast, great idea! You must be a math guy, the way you calculated the percentages of each season's episodes that you've reviewed so far. And considering that you are an Indiana Jones fan, I'm surprised that you were disturbed by the ants eating people (Trumbo's World). Creepy, I agree.

    1. Thanks Liney! I'm afraid I'm a little rusty when it comes to math!
